Antique Chess Game Sets

Chess has been around for many centuries. Therefore, it is safe to assume that there are many antique chess game sets that have found their way into the twenty first century. It is these specific sets that command sometimes very high prices due to their scarcity.

Lets discuss some of the finer sets in a bit more detail.

It is the material as well as the age of the set that makes these chess sets so valuable. Some are made from ebony, some are jade, and some are even ivory. These are the sets that were made completely before the outlawing of some of these materials and primarily come from before nineteen hundred. They have also been carved entirely out of bone and these sets have a certain appeal to many people.

As far as the ivory types of sets are concerned, there are sometimes many different stained colors that is associated with these and each and every piece is very finely hand carved.

It is the far east versions that are delicately carved out of rare materials that command some of the largest prices. And the games box that is folded and includes various inlays will certainly be a small fortune to acquire.

Many of the pieces of these sets will normally depict the standard types of pieces, however, depending where the set originated will have a lot to do with that. For example, a far east set may depict emperors and dragons.

These sets are primarily based in England due to the English's interest in the game. They have played this game for many years and have a renowned interest in these older sets. As opposed to this on the other side of the Atlantic ocean, America may enjoy playing chess, however, the interest in the game simply does not compare to that of the English's. Therefore, one may be more apt to find the antique sets in England more so than in America. Of course, this does not mean that America does not like the game of chess, on the contrary, America does enjoy chess, just not as much as the English.

There are many web sites that deal with these and may even offer a choice few. The on line auctions may have a few also, but the best way to find these types of chess sets is by scourging estate sale. Especially older and larger estate sales. Before the time of television and radio, game playing was a national pastime and many of these places had at least one chess game in the home.

Therefore, in order to find these exquisite antique chess game sets, explore these places and you may just find a gem. Of course, you may find just a basic chess game also, however, odds are that it will certainly be made out of something other than plastic.
